The Most Expensive Diamond Rings, How Much Do They Cost?

It is no secret that diamond rings can be very expensive. We have researched the most expensive diamond rings ever created and listed them here. We might think of rings costing several thousand pounds as expensive, but some diamond rings cost over a million pounds. Harder still to believe, but among the most expensive diamond rings are some that cost over £40 million! Some of these rings are too expensive even for royalty to afford. However, the world's royalty does own some of the most costly, often given as gifts.

In this list, which is probably not complete, we share details about the origin and history of the diamonds, the colour of the gems, ownership and how the rings were made.

Of course, while we share estimates of the value, it is unlikely that any of us could ever hope to own one of these rings - but we can dream, yes, we can dream! Starting from the least expensive and working upward:

The Most Expensive Diamond Rings Ever Sold

Blue Diamond Ring – £7.2 Million

When the least expensive ring in this list costs over £7 million, we can be sure that we are dealing with unusual items! This ring has a carat weight of 6.01 carats. The diamond is a fancy blue cut in a cushion shape with two smaller slightly pink diamonds on either side, set on the band. The last buyer is unknown as it was purchased anonymously at auction. The ring was sold in Hong Kong and went for a price around four times its expected selling price of approximately £1.8 million.

The ring must have caught the buyer's imagination, but that is understandable given how absolutely gorgeous this ring is. The vivid blue of the centre diamond is very eye-catching. The slight pink hue of the supporting diamonds enhances the main gemstone's colour. The diamonds are set onto a platinum band. Can you imagine any woman saying 'no' if offered this ring when her man proposed marriage?

The Vivid Pink – £8.5 Million

Next up is the Vivid Pink ring. The central diamond in this ring is a cushion-cut pink diamond weighing 5 carats. Two white diamonds support the central diamond. This ring was, like the previous ring, sold in Hong Kong for £8.5 million. The auction description for this ring referred to it as 'The Glittering Star', which is a very fitting description.

The diamonds for this ring were mined in South Africa. Pink diamonds, especially of this size, are scarce. This ring is an exotic looking piece of fine jewellery.

The Bulgari Blue Ring – £11 Million

When the Bulgari Blue ring was last sold at auction, it was the most expensive ring ever sold, but others have surpassed it since then. The Bulgari has the largest triangle cut diamond in the world at 10.95 carats. It is paired with a 9.87 carat white triangle diamond. The ring's yellow gold band has baguette-cut diamonds running around its circumference

The ring first appeared in Rome in the 1970s before moving to the United States, where Christie's auction house held it. Before it was auctioned, it was valued at around £3.6 million, but the final selling price was £11 million. The increase in value is associated with the story of what happened to its first owner, a woman who had no children. After she became the owner, she gave birth to a child. The value is thus a sentimental one connected with the good fortune of the woman rather than its intrinsic value.

We concentrate on making and selling high-quality diamond jewellery at sensible prices for real people at All Diamond! At this level, we can see that the cost of an item can far exceed any inherent value.

Chopard Blue Diamond Ring – £11.8 Million

The last time the Chopard Blue diamond ring was sold, it went for £11.8 million. This ring has a striking blue diamond cut into an oval shape on an 18K white gold band with two white diamonds flanking it. Although pure gold is 24K, 18K gold (95% pure) is used even on the priciest jewellery. That's because 24K gold is too soft to be practical for use in jewellery.

The band is embedded with small white diamonds. The blue colour of the diamond comes from trace boron impurities. The diamond was mined from a boron deposit, hence the impurity and vivid blue colour. The actual colour is a mixture of bright teal and a light aquamarine blue. This ring was manufactured by the House of Chopard, a Swiss jewellery and watchmaking company famed for its elegance and high-quality products.

The Vivid Yellow Ring (Dream Diamond Ring) – £11.9 million

The beautiful Vivid Yellow Dream Ring, sixth on our list, is, without a doubt, a gorgeous ring. If you love yellow diamonds then this is the ultimate jewellery choice for you! The diamond used in this ring is one of the very largest cut diamonds in the world and is the most costly yellow diamond ever sold. The ring last sold for £11.9 million.

The diamond was sold in Switzerland through Sotheby's at an auction of Magnificent and Noble jewels. The diamond looks like a tiny daffodil with a similar vivid shade of yellow. The ring is made with the central yellow diamond and two smaller ones on the side of the gold band. The total diamond weight exceeds 100 carats. That's over 20g, a weight that would be pretty noticeable on the finger.

Perfect Pink Diamond – £16.8 Million

The Perfect Pink Diamond comes in at number five on our list of the most expensive diamond rings. The central diamond, the pink one, is a whopping 14.23 carats cut into a rectangular shape flanked by two more rectangular white diamonds weighing 1.67 and 1.73 carats and all mounted onto an 18K white and rose gold band. The GIA report says that the pink diamond is a fancy intense pink, which is very rare. The colour is natural and not enhanced in a lab. The two supporting diamonds are both D colour grade with internally flawless clarity. Clarity is VVS2, and the diamond has excellent clarity. There are only 18 diamonds sold at auction that are larger than the pink gemstone in this ring.

The Winston Blue Diamond Ring – £17.2 Million

The Winston Blue diamond ring has a teardrop-shaped, flawless, vivid blue diamond weighing 13.22 carats. This was, when mined, the largest flawless blue diamond ever found. The blue diamond is flanked by two pear-shaped white diamonds of 1.00CT and 0.96CT. The £17.2 million price was obtained when sold to Harry Winston, Inc, the jewellery house at auction by Christie's in Geneva. The ring was named The Winston Blue diamond ring after the purchase by the CEO of Harry Winston.

The Graff Pink Diamond Ring – £33.4 million

The Graff Pink diamond ring has a central pink diamond weighing 24.7 carats. It is close to the peak of luxury and elegance. The ring was last sold in 2010 at a Sotheby's auction, where it reached a price of £33.4 million. The expected price for the ring before the auction was in the range of £17 - 24 million, so it fetched significantly more than expected. The GIA classifies the diamond as a 'fancy intense pink', a rare, high-quality grade. In terms of its overall quality, it is in the top 2% of all diamonds. The diamond is a rectangular emerald cut with rounded corners flanked by two white diamonds cut into shield shapes. The band is made from shimmering white platinum.

Pink Star Diamond Ring – $52.00 Million

The Pink Star diamond ring is the second most valuable ring in the world - for the time being! The last time it was sold, in 2017, it went for £52 million. The Pink Star diamond was formerly known as the Steinmetz Pink. It weighs 59.60 carats. The GIA grades the diamond as Fancy Vivid Pink. The diamond is reputedly the largest Fancy Vivid Pink in the world. The diamond was mined in South Africa in 1999. In its rough form, before cutting, the diamond weighed 132.5 carats. The shape of the cut diamond is somewhat similar to a scarab beetle. The Pink Star is so large that when mounted onto a ring, the wearer cannot move their fingers properly.

Wittelsbach-Graff Diamond Ring – £57.84 Million

The Wittelsbach-Graff diamond ring with the last sale price of almost £58 million is the most valuable ring on this list and, almost certainly, the world. One might consider such a price obscene for a piece of coloured crystal, but it is something special with a long history.

The Wittelsbach-Graff diamond was found at the Kulloor Mine in the Guntur district of India toward the end of the 17th century. The diamond has a deep greyish blue colour. Earlier in the 20th century, the diamond was graded for clarity as VVS. Still, after it was recut, it was regraded to the better 'IF' or Internally Flawless.

The Wittelsbach-Graff diamond weighs 31.06 carats. Although VVS clarity is not flawless, it means that any flaws are very hard to see, even under 10x magnification and with good lighting. The diamond originally belonged to King Philip IV of Spain. It is reputed that the original cutting was so complex that three diamond cutters worked on the diamond.

The diamond was recut in 2009 to enhance the diamond's colour and remove some damage to the girdle around the diamond.
