All About Sapphire Engagement Rings

Here comes the world’s shortest blog post: YES, a sapphire engagement ring is a good choice.

But you came here to find out about sapphire engagement rings; you need something more!

The first thing to remember is that the diamond engagement ring as we know it was not ‘a thing’ until the vast South African diamond mines opened in the late 19th century. Before that time, precious stones and engagement rings were something for the very wealthy 1%, not the rest of us. Indeed, the classic solitaire diamond ring idea did not appear until Tiffany came up with the six-prong solitaire diamond setting in 1886.

So, the idea of a diamond engagement ring is a pretty new thing. If you choose a sapphire engagement ring, you are not overturning centuries of tradition. Instead, you are making your own choice in the face of a vast corporate marketing effort on the part of diamond miners and sellers the world over. If you want a sapphire or diamond and sapphire engagement ring because that’s what you like, then that is your choice, it’s a good choice, and we at All Diamond say ‘Hurray’!

Why Choose A Sapphire Engagement Ring?

The first, the best and overwhelming reason to choose a sapphire or sapphire and diamond engagement ring is that it is what you like; you love the deep blue colour and perhaps how it contrasts with the precious metal of the ring. Rose gold against the cerulean blue of the sapphire is one of the most striking and beautiful colour combinations I know of – but that’s just my opinion!

Choosing to pair the ice-cool white of diamonds with the deep blue of sapphire is a striking choice and with which our jewellery design team fully agree!

We even team up the newly fashionable pink sapphire with diamonds and gold to create gorgeous and romantic jewellery. Many people don’t even know that sapphires can be pink, but yes, they can!

If appearances alone are not enough, how about the symbolism associated with sapphires? Does that influence your preferences? We are not here to say whether this stuff is true or not. Millions of people choose to believe. More practically, if one knows the meanings and symbolism, then one’s choice of a sapphire or two in an engagement ring is a signal, a message, to the world.

Here are a few of the meanings and associations for sapphires. The ancient Greeks saw sapphires as a symbol of wisdom. They also connected sapphires with the Goddess Venus, the goddess of love. The Greeks and Romans both saw the sapphire as being a bringer of good luck. But it doesn’t stop there. For Christians, sapphires are supposed to be symbols of purity, wisdom and chastity. As the birthstone for people born in September, the message is of wisdom. So, if you choose a sapphire, you’re sending out some powerful coded messages to the world!

Why Is It That Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend? Why Not Sapphires?

Diamonds are supposed, at least by lyricists and scriptwriters, to be a girl’s best friend because, as a famous copywriter once wrote for an advertising campaign – a diamond is forever.

Well, they’re almost right, but it isn’t only diamonds that meet that target!

A diamond is supposed to last forever because it is almost indestructible. A diamond is the hardest natural substance on the planet, with a Mohs rating of 10—a perfect score. But if you hit a diamond with a hammer or put it in a hot flame? That diamond will have a very short life indeed!

But what of a sapphire? Well, they are almost as hard as a diamond, with a nine on the Mohs hardness scale. But just like diamonds, I recommend not to try hitting them with a hammer or putting them in a furnace. For most of us, the point is that sapphire is just as able to stand up to life in an engagement ring as diamond.

But Are Sapphires Precious?

Your fiancé is giving you an engagement ring; it’d better be precious, right?

If he shows up with cubic zirconia in a QVC box, then he’s either a cheapskate or has an awful sense of humour!

So, where do sapphires stand on the ‘precious stones’ chart?

Actually, pretty good. But you certainly get more for your money with a sapphire as compared to a diamond. As a very rough guide, a high-quality diamond could cost 3 or 4 times as much as a similar size and quality sapphire. However, of course, that’s still a lot of money sitting in that beautiful gem on your finger! But possibly more importantly, when a sapphire is used in a ring, then it tends to be larger than a diamond would be – with a sapphire, you’re going to have the chance to really impress everyone who sees your engagement ring!

Is that precious enough for you? We think it should be!

And, don’t forget, if you go for a sapphire engagement ring, it doesn’t mean there won’t be diamonds! Our designers think that diamonds are an ideal match for sapphires, and they have no worries about showing their ideas to us. Check out our collections. Match up the precious metal to your skin tone, choose a deep blue and ice white ring and feel like a million dollars/pounds/euros!
